Our Story

After losing my husband and father of my children to cancer, my oldest son was having difficulty sleeping and I suggested he try to find something natural to help. He then came to me and asked if I heard of “sensory deprivation”. I replied, “Yes”, as I had just watched a special on TV about John C. Lilly and “sensory deprivation”. He explained how it helps with sleeplessness and we decided it would be worth trying. Even though we live in a large suburban town, the closest float center was one and a half hours drive, but we were determined to see if this natural remedy would help. It was amazing!!! We never felt so relaxed!! Unfortunately, we then had a long drive home through rush hour traffic. This is when I decided to start looking into floatation therapy and discovered the amazing benefits of floating! Helping people has always made me happy and this is one way I truly feel I am helping people.

"Happiness is beneficial for the body, but it is grief that develops the powers of the mind."
-Marcel Proust

Frequently Asked Questions

When was the last time you could stop your thoughts from occupying every second of your day and night? At a time when work life balance is a struggle and we are having to constantly multi-task, the idea of taking time to be still and quiet our brain is more popular and necessary than ever. Floating promises to give that peace of mind back to you, even if you have never meditated a day in your life.

About Floating

Floatation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation, uses float pods/rooms to induce deep physical and mental relaxation. Floating provides the brain an opportunity to quiet down senses such as vision, movement, tactile sensation, and/or breath. A Float Pod is a lightless soundproof pod/room containing skin temperature water with an average of 1000 pounds of Epsom salt, in which individuals float effortlessly. Floating can decrease stress, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, chronic pain, high blood pressure, and fatigue.

“Peace is its own reward”

-Mahatma Gandhi

What if I'm claustrophobic?

Being in the tanks is more like floating in outer space than being shut in a box. You’re always in control of your environment, and even people with extreme claustrophobia have reported having no problems during their time in the tank. You can always leave the door open for as long as you like – again, you’re in control.

Can I float if I'm pregnant?

Pregnant women love floating!   There is even a special position you can float in that relieves all the weight of the baby off of the mother’s body which can be a great help to those suffering from lower back pain. Please consult with your physician before coming in.

However, if you are 36 weeks or beyond we strongly recommend waiting, due to potential risk of water breaking, until after the baby is born to float again.

Is there anything I should do to prepare?

Don’t drink coffee for several hours beforehand (it can make your system jittery). Also, we suggest not shaving the day of your float, the saltwater can irritate your skin. Eating a light meal about an hour to 90 minutes ahead of time stops your stomach from rumbling while you float which can be distracting. Other than that, there’s no specific preparation needed.

Can I float if its ‘that-time-of-the-month’?

Unfortunately, no.

Can I float if I just dyed my hair?

It is best to float the day before using hair dye and/or tanning products. If you use hair dye or tanning products you will need to wait two weeks to float or until the water is clear and there is no color product left on the towel.

Do I need to bring anything?

If you have longer hair, you may want to bring a comb. Also, something to put your contact lenses into while you’re in the tank. Other than that, we provide everything you need (towels, robes, earplugs, body wash/shampoo, conditioner, tea, water…)

What do I wear?

You may wear a bathing suit if you'd like, but the best way to float is to not wear anything at all!

What kind of float tanks do we have?

We have the Deluxe Float Room and the Float Orb (we have the first one in the State of Florida!) from Superior Float Tanks.

Can more than one person float in a tank at a time?

Yes! We have the Deluxe Float Room which can float up to 2 people at a time.

Do I have to stay in the whole time?

There aren’t any latches on the tank doors, and you can get out anytime. That being said, the 60-minutes usually goes by waaaay faster than you’d expect.

What’s the longest someone has been in the tank?

There is a float center in Portland Oregon called Float On that had an endurance athlete rent a room for a 24 hour period and apparently floated for most of that time! We haven’t heard of anyone floating longer than that.

Who invented these crazy devices?

Dr. John C. Lily, an American physician, neuroscientist, psychoanalyst, psychonaut, philosopher, writer and inventor.

Is this some hipster new-age mumbo jumbo?

Floating has been around for over 40 years and has loads of published scientific research to back it up. No mumbo jumbo here.

How do you clean the tanks?

The water is fully filtered 3-5 times between each float, passing through an intense filtration system for particulate matter and then a UV filter which targets the DNA and RNA of bacteria, viruses, algae and other biological matter. Furthermore, the Epsom salt solution is naturally sanitary; the combination of the high concentrations of Epsom salt and a small amount of disinfectant make it cleaner than a pool and nearly impossible for microorganisms to survive.

What if I fall asleep in the tank?

The water in the tank is incredibly buoyant and very relaxing – it’s entirely possible that you could fall asleep. Indeed, some people love to sleep during their float, and you should feel free to do the same! It’s extremely unlikely that you’ll roll in your sleep, but if you do the worst that can happen is getting woken up by a bit of saltwater in your eyes or mouth.

Will I become a dehydrated raisin from soaking for so long?

Nope - your skin doesn’t even prune up at all! The magnesium sulfate actually makes your skin very silky and soft. You will absorb some of the Epsom salt, so it’s advised that you to drink plenty of water or tea after your float.

How often should I float?

Floatation therapy reduces anxiety, relieves pain, relieves stress, and helps with muscle recovery. Similar to maintaining a healthy workout routine, eating nutritiously, working with your medical community to take advantage of treatment and preventive measures, you also maximize the benefits by maintaining a floatation therapy routine. The number of sessions and recurrence differs for each individual.
